The South Island forms one of the two major islands of New Zealand, the other being the North Island. The Maori name for the South Island is Te Wai Pounamu which means "The Greenstone Water" (greenstone being jade).
It has an area of 58,093 square miles), making it the world's 12th-largest island. Along its west coast runs the mountain chain of the Southern Alps; Aoraki/Mount Cook is the highest point, 3,754 m (12,283.3') above sea level.
Historical Note: In the 19th century, today's South Island bore the name Middle Island, and the name South Island referred to today's Stewart Island/Rakiura.
The South Island is often called the Mainland (somewhat humorously) because it is larger than the North Island, and because it existed first according to the corresponding Maori legend. The North island, however, is more populous, being home to three million out of a total of four million kiwis.

Information on Stewart Island - Southland
In the Maori language, Stewart Island is known as Rakiura, which translates as ‘the land of the glowing skies’. This name probably refers to the aurora australis, an atmospheric phenomenon which is often seen in the southern sky. About 85% of the island is a national park and there’s only one settlement of any size – Halfmoon Bay (sometimes called Oban), which offers a variety of accommodation. The majority of visitors come to hike the well-maintained tracks. Department of Conservation huts provide accommodation for overnight hikes. Offshore is Ulva Island, which is a predator-free bird sanctuary. It is accessible by water taxi. Functional facts: Approx. population 420, Department of Conservation Visitor Centre, ferry service from Bluff.
