New Zealand's unit of currency is the New Zealand dollar (NZ$). Coins have values of 5, 10, 20 and 50 cents, $1 and $2; notes have values of $5, $10, $20, $50 and $100.
Credit cards, ATMS and EFTPOS:
All the major credit cards (Visa, Mastercard, Amex, JCB and Diners) are widely accepted. Throughout New Zealand there is a system called EFTPOS which you can pay for most things at the point of sale with your card - essentially it's like having an ATM machine at every restaurant, bar, hotel or retail shop throughout the country!
Standard ATM machines are available in most towns and credit cards can be linked to foreign bank accounts by networks such as Cirrus and Plus.
Traveller’s cheques are a safe way to carry money and can be exchanged at most banks.
Banking Facilities:
Banks are open from 9.30am to 4.30pm Monday to Friday and with some branches open on Saturday mornings but remember there are limited banking facilities apart from Automatic Teller Machines (ATM machines) available on weekends or public holidays. You can use your international credit card at ATM’s as long as they have a four digit PIN attached to the card.
Goods And Services Tax (GST):
All good and services are subject to 12.5% Goods and Services Tax (GST) included in the displayed price.
Tipping, although welcome, is not expected.
