Renown globally as New Zealand's only mural town, Katikati has other claims to fame.
From an initial three wall paintings in 1991 the town is now home to nearly 40 murals adorning the town walls. Katikati is built on the banks of the Uretara River and is fast becoming known for its summer evening concerts featuring jazz, classical and contemporary music. As well, Katikati offers a growing collection of other outdoor art. The town has plans to further this growth, with open air art, more murals, sculptures and festivals.
One successful project is the Haiku Pathway, set up as part of Katikati’s millennium project. The Haiku Pathway is a restful, contemplative walk in peaceful surroundings and includes a beautiful river boulder trail where the stones have been carved with Haiku verse, carefully selected by a local poet.
Visit Te Kura a Maia (Bowentown Heads), a former musket pa, which offers stupendous views of the Kaimai Ranges and Matakana Island. The Island itself is a nesting site for a large number of sea birds, including the endangered New Zealand dotterel. The island features a beautiful pine plantation, stunning sea views, long white sand beaches, kayaking, surfing and fishing opportunities. Boat tours operate out of Omokoroa and an island Marae experience is available.
There are many small farms producing nashis, avocados, citrus, kiwifruit, lavender, vegetables and flowers. The rich soil and sunny climate are perfect for high quality production. Or visit the Katikati bird gardens. Feed the cockatoos, enjoy the range of exotic birds or enjoy a picnic in the sprawling gardens – with sculptures and an art gallery it is fast becoming one of the town’s landmarks.
Katikati is also home to Morton Estate, one of New Zealand’s award winning vineyards. With cellar door sales and wine tasting seven days a week, Morton Estate is a popular tourist attraction in the area.
Close to the lush Kaimai-Mamaku Forest Park, Katikati offers numerous bush walks, whale watching in the harbour, beautiful scenery, annual events and is a bustling and cheerful example of New Zealand small town life.
With a number of fine accommodation options, the charming town of Katikati is a vibrant holiday destination for the whole family.
